Project Taara: Google launches broadband Internet through light beams in Africa

We live in a fertile time when it comes to communication technologies. However, if some already have satellites to communicate, others have little or nothing to connect to the world’s largest communication network. In this sense, several companies, where Google also has a presence, are working on the Taara Project.

According to what has been made known, Google’s parent company, Alphabet, and its partner Econet Group will launch a broadband service through beams of light. The idea is to create a wireless system to provide Internet to countries in sub-Saharan Africa.

Alphabet group subsidiary X – The Moonshot Factory stands out for being a diverse group of inventors and entrepreneurs who build and launch technologies to improve the lives of millions, up to thousands of people. In this sense, the company announced that its high-speed optical wireless broadband project, Project Taara, is already being worked with Internet operator Econet.

Thus, through its subsidiaries, this communications company will begin to deploy its technology in sub-Saharan Africa.

According to the company, the technology deployment is already using several small pilot projects in Kenya. However, now the Taara project and the Econet operator are ready to move forward. In this sense, companies will start adding high-speed wireless optical links to complement and improve Econet service’s reach more broadly. The company that will, on the ground, begin implementation is Liquid Telecom in Kenya.

The technology used by the project can be used practically to correct gaps in traditional fiber-optic networks. The signal can cross rivers, terrain, or other obstacles that could be difficult or impossible to bypass. However, as we can see in the animated image, this technology requires an uninterrupted line of sight.

To do this, X places them on top of tall structures to ensure that this requirement is met. On the other hand, the technology used can be used to “plug holes” in traditional networks, so there is sometimes no need to build everything from scratch.

This technology is relatively easy and inexpensive to get into operation in contrast to networks that use loon project stratospheric balloons or Starlink satellites. Moreover, it can even be adapted to integrate with existing network infrastructure.

X – The Moonshot Factory is testing the Taara project in several areas around the world. However, this technology is still a technology that is maturing towards a marketing stage. The product will possibly be added to serve as a supplement to existing networks in many places around the planet.
